Salento, a peninsula consisting mostly of the province of Lecce, it is in the far south-eastern area of Puglia. It can be found at the very tip of the heel of the boot represented by Italy.
The peninsula sits in the Adriatic sea on the east coast and in the Ionian on the west. Beautiful coasts, clean sea and moderate climate for the whole year are the top assets of the Salentine peninsula.
Other than the sea, Salentine tourism is boosted by the beauty of the churches and the elegance of Lecce's buildings. Lecce is the provincial capital of Salento, it also boasts the titles "The Baroque Capital" and "Florence of the South".
The best example of "barocco leccese" is the most famous monument in Lecce; the church of
'Santa Croce', with the adjacent 'Palazzo dei Celestini' (XVI Century). Another splendid example of beautiful architecture in Lecce is the complex
'Piazza del Duomo' (XVII Century).
The province of Lecce hosts lots of tourist hot spots such as the beautiful Otranto and
Gallipoli. They shine on the coasts of Salento, both old and fascinating to curious tourists. Both towns are adorned with fabulous architecture and monuments in their historic centers.
As an English tourist i can honestly say I love Salento. I may be biased because of family ties but I am sure anyone who visits will agree; it is friendly, beautiful and interesting. - Alex
